Gemini's Public Information Officer Opens the Public Information and Outreach Office

8.1 Meter Gemini Observatory Mirror Delivered to Mauna Kea

 The largest single-piece telescope mirror ever to travel to Mauna Kea arrived safely at its final destination, 13,780 feet above sea level, on Sunday, June 28th.

First Gemini 8-meter Mirror is Best of Its Size

Polishing of the first 8.1-meter blank was successfully completed in early January by REOSC in France. The test results are outstanding and meet or exceed all Gemini specifications for optical performance.

Australia to Share in "Heavenly Twins"

The Australian Academy of Science today welcomed the announcement that Australia is to join the International Gemini Project.  Australia will contribute a 5% share through the Australian Research Council.

Second Gemini Mirror Blank Fused

Fifty-five blocks of low-expansion ULE[tm] glass were successfully fused together at Corning's Canton, New York facility today to form the second Gemini primary mirror blank.

Corning Completes Gemini Large Telescope Mirror Blank

Corning Incorporated has completed the first of two 8.1-meter primary mirror blanks for the Gemini Project telescope. The mirror blanks are manufactured by fusing hexagonal pieces of ULE zero-expansion glass in a high-temperature furnace.

October Inauguration for Giant Gemini "Twin" Telescopes in Hawaii and Chile

Ground-breaking will take place October 6 for the northern telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, followed by an October 22 inauguration for construction of the southern telescope in Cerro Pachon, Chile.
